Andrew Husted, AUP Unit Auburn Class of 2013, shared some of his own experiences in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and his growing emergency response resume.

A member of AUP’s class of 2013, Andrew Husted graduate from Auburn University with a degree in Mathematics. While at Auburn he was active in a variety of student organizations ranging from serving as a section leader in the Auburn University Marching Band to volunteering with Best Buddies (a “big brother” type program for disadvantaged children),  to serving as a Lead Systems Engineer in the Auburn University Space Program.

Before graduating, Mr. Husted completed an extremely competitive firefighter school at Auburn and was hired by the City of Auburn as a firefighter. He is certified in Firefighter I/II, Hazmat A/O, and is an EMT.

After joining AUP Unit Auburn at the end of his sophomore year Mr. Husted went on to serve as Auburn’s student Unit Leader and the student Deputy Division Leader, where he helped to lead all AUP Units nationwide. He also served as Flotilla Staff Officer for Human Resources in Flotilla Auburn (081-08-12). He spent many weekends working with the Coast Guard Active Duty at USCG Station Dauphin Island after completing Aids to Navigation (ATON) training at Coast Guard Sector Mobile.  Mr. Husted completed his Vessel Examiner’s qualification exam as well as boat crew qualification, and led AUP Unit Auburn’s response to the destructive tornado that struck the Auburn area in the Fall of 2011, coordinating personnel and working recovery and reclamation from ground zero immediately following the storm to three days post-storm.

Now an alumnus of both Auburn University and AUP, Mr. Husted has continued not just as a firefighter, but also as an Auburn graduate student and the AUP Operations Project Manager coordinating unit stand-up and ongoing operations nationwide, hoping to earn an appointment to the Coast Guard’s active duty Officer Candidate School (OCS).
